Photoshop + Bamboo tablet. Close up of her face hereclose up of snakes

This is my view of Medusa. I like to see her as being cursed, not just a cold monster. I hope that it comes across from her expression and that it intrigues you enough to consider this alternative story.

Finally did it! I think this time, I'm finished with this painting for real:D I'm still really open to feedback even so!

I hope you like it, I will be posting a compilation of all the wips in order as one image, soon - I think it's pretty cool seeing how people work through something or "redraws" so I thought I'd post mine:)

Absolutely beautiful work!
The snakes are very captivating and they seem like they might leap off the page and attack someone.

Thank you so much:)

I'm happy you like the snakes :D They were so tedious lol I was just looking at them and thinking - "I could work on those a little more.....no, no no no no not again....not now!" haha...i need a break from them for a bit...I just think they could use a little more definition where they ARE  in focus...obviously leaving the blurred, blurred.

They look great :)
But taking a break is a good idea. When you get back to it sometime you'll have more energy to get the perfect look you're going for :D

I really love her expression and how you portrayed her. ♥
Tend also to think her more as cursed, rather than totally evil...

Somehow it reminds me of Caravaggio's Medusa!

Wow what a compliment :) I know that painting and just looked it up again...it totally has the same color themes I think, also she has lots of eyebrow wrinkles :D only her head is chopped off and he is like one of the best painters of all time lol....I must have been influenced by it from memory...cool!

I'm happy you have the same idea about her, I wonder if I'm not as alone on this as I thought! ...here I was thinking I was original, haha! I'm kidding, I think some people don't know the story...but maybe it's very few.

That really was the first thing that came to my mind.

I think there's something similar in a way you draw faces & expressions. And not just this, but your whole style has got that something reminding me of medieval oil-paintings... find it very appealing. :)

Hahaa I think it might help being slightly obsessed with the Greek Mythology! ;) But yeah, maybe not too many know the whole story.. and even if they do, people see things differently... I really like how you portrayed her ♥

So cool :)

That's because I LOVE Renaissance art...lol. Some people grew up copying comic book superheroes, robots, princesses etc...I (badly) copied Michelangelo's sculptures, paintings and sketches...I love the way her draws and the sculpture is actually difficult to believe if you ever get a chance to see them in person...ok I'm going to stop myself from ranting. But that's pretty cool that it comes across in my personal work, what influenced me so much:D

Also like Botticelli, Leonardo etc...but yeah...I'm geeking out a little now. Don't get me wrong I also drew superheroes with huge muscles and Robin hood and knights, demons, devils, dragons etc lol What did you draw growing up? Like was there anything you always came back to ? Even while doodling? Please tell me you always drew flowers, cause wow you are good at it now! Mine is this type of thing

I am slightly obsessed with Greek mythology too :D but that's an interesting way to think about it, even if you know the story - people see it differently...never thought of that! I mean my immediate reaction when I read the myth (long after knowing about Medusa just visually from games etc) I was really disappointed in Zeus...lol, and felt so bad for Medusa, who really didn't do anything wrong. I don't understand a lot of stuff about Ancient people's beliefs but I guess that's ok. :)

Thank you so much  I like when these kinds of conversations happen here:)

Aah okay, wow I think too it's so cool and awesome that your love for the renaissance art shows in your own style! :) And please go on with the 'ranting', if you feel like it - I do that too all the time when I get really excited about something. :D ;)

Have you seen any of his sculptures in person? I haven't but sure would love to...

I admire and love (I mean who doesn't ;D ) the Old Masters, but I'm not as influenced by them as you I think. :) As a kid, I was drawn (and still am heh) to anything colorful and (surprise surprise) anything with heavy lines. ;P Comics, manga, anime... though mostly I just drew something (really weird and something that just made absolutely no sense) from my head and illustrated my own little stories. Then I actually had a 10-year break (!!) from drawing due to some heavy problems as a prepubescent-teenager-young adult. Rediscovered my love for the drawing somewhere around 20 years old and ~five years later around 2013 started to take it pretty seriously. Now, it is my absolute everything and I live and breathe drawing and art every single day.

Hmm guess it was my turn to ramble on... :giggle:

And no, I actually discovered my love for the flowers a few years ago, but thank you! :giggle:

Yay, you too are obsessed with the Greek Mythology! :D :highfive: Agreed and you know, after everything I've read about Zeus, he really doesn't come across as a very nice person... :lmao:

And happy to hear! I like these kind of conversations very much too and with some people you just instantly feel like getting along very well!

Thanks for the encouragements :D I hope that as I learn digital painting I will be able to keep that same influence...It's such a different medium, have you tried it?

Actually I've been really lucky and I've seen Michelangelo's sculptures in real life at the Louvre in Paris...it was very surreal because I knew them so well but wow...what a difference in person, you don't get from the pictures how incredibly soft the marble looks...what is cool is unlike the really famous paintings(Monalisa)you can actually get really close to the sculptures. Unfortunately there was an obnoxious tour guide being REALLY loud and American lol...I tried to ignore him as much as I could. He was using all this pretentious fake art language...ANYWAYS, it was really cool..they look so real, and they are bigger than I thought. On the flip side, I also was able to see his drawings in London at a show and they are A LOT smaller than I thought....also amazing to see things like that. I think the sketches was even more impressive on a personal level to me. I had copied so many of them (many times) so seeing the real thing was like :squee: personal revamp ....have you seen any? OR other inspirational artists' work in person?
I think it's pretty cool to see.

I'm not surprised that you like Anime, Comics and Manga stuff :D and colors of course..I'm so behind with color! it's funny I've JUST discovered colors...And I mean I hated using anything but pencil till I was like 24 (around), then JUST black ink was added...then like red ink...lol!! How did you just dive in?!?! I was always afraid of color and I felt like i would loose the depth that bw had...of course this is not true but I had lots of misconceptions :D ...just in this last year I've started using color in watercolor and digitally..and it's hard, like really hard! I almost gave up, but just today I was thinking - COLORS ARE AWESOME!! I've been missing out on so much!!! lol...So you saw the light way sooner lol.

You know it's funny I also stopped drawing for long periods of time, I always wondered why but it never lasted as long as ten years! wow, that's cool you came back to it:) I actually drew a lot as a teen, nice escape.
Don't worry about rambling, as you said it's cool:D That's awesome that you captured that ability with the flowers so recently.

Yea I love greek myths, I don't know why. always have. Maybe cause they are like characters, each with their own animals, symbols etc...I love symbols and analogies :) Lol, I hate Zeus. XD...

Yeah I never expected to start all these conversations when I commented on your work, lol- never even thought you'd reply haha! Do you have a greek myth that you really like, or a god, goddess or character?

No problem! And I have absolutely zero experience or knowledge of any digital stuff. :D  I'm so hanged up on traditional art supplies alone, I'm pretty sure I'll never switch to digital. For me, there's just something very special about traditional art. :)

Louvre is actually one place I'm dying to go to one day ♥♥♥ And so WOW, I can imagine how you must have felt! Um, mindblowingly wonderful? :giggle: There is a big difference seeing stuff like that in reality vs. pics, I agree! And I think those sculptures are something so unbelievable just in pics alone, so I'd probably get a stroke or something seeing them in real life. :XD:

I was in St. Petersburg last year and we visited The State Russian Museum... The building itself is an work of art and was filled with centuries old paintings and sculptures. Oil paintings looking like photographs, largest of them covering one huge wall. I could just stare and love art like that all day and it never ceases to amaze me. :)

Yeah my love for the anime/manga-stuff might show! ;D And hahhaa yeah I saw the light with colors as a kid already ;P Just have always loved colors and the possibilities they provide..  (though in clothing and in general my fav colors are black, black black and red :bucktooth: ) And LOVE going through different colors and picking up the ones I want to use or think might work... :plotting: As much as I love ink, I just always feel the work is incomplete without colors, you know? And I am glad you have found the wonderful world of colors! ;) .. but I am no expert with them by any means, should learn to use them more bravely and lots of more different color schemes than what I'm using right now!

Looking back now, I find it INCREDIBLE I was without drawing for 10 years! :'D And I know that without it, I'd succumb back to the life I had then and that is a big NO-thank-you. Also, drawing pretty much equals breathing, so... :D

LOL, hate Zeus! :D Yeah he's pretty awful, there we have another agreement ;> Love that you love symbols and Greek Mythology! ♥ Do you like other mythologies too? I love all kinds, but Greek is the most fascinating one for me. And oh boy, there are a LOT of interesting things... Hm I LOVE the Erinyes; Alecto, Megaera, Tisiphone, then Persephone and Demeter.. Prometheus.. Medusa.. hahaa I just find the WHOLE mythology and it's surroundings and 'settings' (Titans, Underworld, Mt. Olympus with its gods etc) so fascinating! :D  Do you have any fav story or character?

And I'll always reply! LoveloveLOVE having nice and funny conversations with awesome people around DA! :giggle: :tighthug:

Well this is like email length...like pre-gmail length email lol...

I so know what you mean by never wanting to go digital!! I was absolutely like that till like six months ago. I don't know what happened, i just wanted to try something new I guess. There is definitely a hugely sharp learning curve. I have to say even though I'm getting a little more comfortable with it, it's nothing like holding a pencil in your hand and feeling the texture of the paper etc...having the watercolor spread with water and then dry etc...I will never give up traditional art, I've just added digital I think...It's like before I was only using pencil and in bw, then bw ink, then red ink...lol...It's been slow. I was so prejudice against digital art, I was like "oh people are caught up in the hype, its so flat and unemotional, not human etc...and color is for bubbly cheery people - not like me- lol....I can't use it!" So recently I got fed up and wanted to get out of all my walls that I built around mediums and colors. SO I'M RAMBLING. Sorry Panda Emoji-10 (Blush) [V1] Basically what I want to say (simply) is I am normally very hardcore traditional art and have been recently converted lol.

Yes, it's def worth going to see orginal artworks, I have always wanted to visit Russia but hasn't happened yet:) Sounds cool! And yes the architecture that the art is IN is very important to me as well. The Louvre is very nice, they used the building to their advantage for sure. At the entrance to the Greek/roman sculpture you walk up a wide staircase that has light coming from the top and looking down on you is "nike" the goddess of victory sculpture on a huge stand...very dramatic and using the architecture to create it. I liked that lol. The sculpture itself is beautiful, the little wrinkles in her dress are amazingly delicate - I can't believe it's stone! I wish her head was still there lol.

You're wardrobe sounds like how my art was lol (I would agree and add grey. love grey.) Which anime do you like? I've only seen a few, I like the ones set in olden times better (duh fantasy) like Samurai and emperors etc :D any recommendations?
I've seen Samurai X, Samurai Chemploo, Seirei no Moribito (guardian of the sacred water spirit), ghibli movies most of them, I think that's it:D

About color, I feel like there is so much to know - all the interactions are so interesting to me. They act completely different alone and together - and then with a third or fourth etc...it's so much fun!

Oh man you know much more about Greeks than me! I like Medusa, Minotaur ..obviously, but Minotaur mostly for the creature not the story. I like Artemis cause she has all the animals (deer especially I think) and moon and a bow :D
Demeter also - the story is cool, that she is stuck in hell for six months because she ate six pomegranate seeds from there. That's why the whether is changing according to the myth of course. I like Icarus, cause of the story and wings :D
The nymphs that are like part tree, all the creatures that are only part human. I love the greek/roman armor as well. Oh and all the symbols and stuff around the different gods and goddesses. Like they even have the god of wine lol...Bacchus/Dionysus. Also...do you remember the disney movie Fantasia ? the original ? Tons of this stuff in it:D I also played some computer games back in the day lol...cause I'm so old...that had all these creatures (Heroes of might and magic 2,3)

I used to draw copies of the user manuals' artwork all the time. Lol. Oh and then the master paintings like Botticelli's "Primavera" has the graces in it etc...you know all that.
LOL I googled the names you listed and this is so me "Alecto" -  "the implacable or unceasing anger" loool

I like Greek myths more in a way because they don't belong to any religion of today. But neither is the Egyptian stuff and it doesn't interest me as much- I kind of feel like it's "too popular" lol...sad yes I know.
Then there is the Norse mythology also which is fun, Japanese stuff also but that's connected to a living religion of "Shinto" I think... They have some cool spirits and gods, like the thunder god has drums and the god of lightning has a white sheet:D

Ok its ridiculous how long this is LOL. Yeah it sounds like art has helped you out of a bad time, that's cool. DONT STOP! lol. Have you ever designed tattoos? I feel like it could work somehow with your style. Although tattoos can be anything these days, in a good way.
